The original yogis were rebels. They rejected tradition in favor of self discovery to achieve self realization. They used their bodies as a vehicle to find God. To unify with God. Often leaving the comforts of a normal life for the harsh conditions of a cave or mountain hut. They practiced extreme forms of breath control, twisted and bent their bodies, chanted, meditated, starved and generally pushed themselves to the extremes. The practice of Yoga came from the realization that union with God (self realization, enlightenment, samadi, bliss) was possible with a disciplined approach. The word yoga means union. Sometimes, it is misunderstood as the union of body and mind. More accurately it is the union of one with all that is. Union with God. If you don’t like the word God, substitute with any term that you like. Creator, energy, the universe. The words do not matter they simply act as signposts to what is.

Through the practice of yoga it was only natural that the yogis attitude towards all living things became one of kindness and compassion. Of non violence, non harming. These were not rules that needed to be obeyed. It is the natural state. We don’t have to go to the extremes that the original yogis went to. The path has been forged. Yoga texts provide us with an insight into the nature of yoga. With a little dedication and an open mind and heart we can enrich our lives with this practice. When we say we practice yoga (or teach) we should be aware of what the word means. Coming to the state of yoga is the purpose of the practice. It is not a stretching class. It is not a calorie burning workout. It is an act of devotion.

The delay in opening our Hot yoga room at Yoga Life has prompted me to write about non heated yoga and it’s advantages. It may encourage some of you that only practice heated yoga (Bikram or heated Vinyasa) to step outside the hot room.

It’s understandable that Hot yoga is so popular. It’s effects are immediate. Hot, sweaty, intense classes that leave students feeling good. Athletes love it because it feels like a workout. People with busy minds love it because the intensity slows them down. New students find they can go deeper into postures. All good, right? Maybe not so. If you are fit, have a healthy immune system and a live a life with low stress levels then Hot yoga can be a wonderful form of asana practice. If you can’t tick all of those boxes then a long term heated yoga asana practice may not be right for you.

The intensity of Bikram yoga comes from the heat. Without the heat the sequence is not difficult. Add the environmental challenge and it sometimes feels like climbing a very high mountain. That feeling comes from your body reacting to the heat while trying to hold a very simple yoga posture. The stressor is the heat. What would happen if you could use that energy to work more deeply in the posture instead of overcoming the environmental conditions? It’s not uncommon for students that only practice heated yoga to find that their foundation is weak. The basic postures, when done correctly, and held, can pose a big challenge. Instead of your heart rate increasing to pump blood to your skin to cool your body, that energy can be channeled into the yoga posture.

So you LOVE Hot yoga? Keep doing it. It can be an amazing part of your yoga asana experience. Ready for something else? Take the stairs to the left of reception there is something else going on up there.

Vinyasa is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. The word Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” In other words, the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. This technique is sometimes also called Vinyasa Flow, or just Flow because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. This style allows for a lot of variety, but will almost certainly include Sun Salutations. Some very popular yoga styles, such as Ashtanga and Power yoga make use of the Vinyasa method.
